Write it Right Wednesdays
When to use quotation marks
Next time you’re texting your friend about the latest episode of your favorite show or that new book you’re reading, you should put quotations around the titles. Quotation marks help make the title standout for the reader. There are specific cases where you’ll use quotation marks, besides to indicate someone’s direct quote; and I did the research for us during my newspaper working days.
Put “quotation marks” around: book titles, computer game titles, movie titles, opera titles, play titles, poem titles, album and song titles, radio & TV program titles, and the titles of lectures, speeches and works of art.
When you use quotations properly, it helps clarify who’s doing what for the reader which helps with comprehension. It’s always important, some might say and I believe, to think about your reader when writing. You want to write for your readers for their enlightenment. Remember the more you practice good writing, the more you build your memory muscle so it gradually becomes natural.
Keep the above list somewhere near your desk; or better yet, save it in the Notes app on your phone. Once you use it a few times you’ll start to remember when to use it and when not to. Good luck!
