Write it Right Wednesdays

Numbers: Don’t spell out dates or other serial numbers

April 29, 2020

Have you ever typed a letter and sometimes you spell out the number and other times you write it? Well, I’m here to tell you that according to The Elements of Style handbook (aka the ‘Bible’ for writers) when writing you do not spell out dates or other serial numbers. Instead, write them in figures or in Roman notation. What does that mean? It means do not write November twenty. Instead write November 20. Let’s look at two examples:

Incorrect: We met on February first.

Correct: We met on February 1.

Incorrect: Tesla Model S P one-hundred D is my favorite car!

Correct: Tesla Model S P100D is my favorite car!

Now, there are exceptions to this rule; just like anything else. Here’s the exception: spell out dates and other serial numbers when they occur in dialogue. What does that mean? See the two examples below.

Examples:

“My favorite date is March twelfth.” Melinda said.

“I turned twenty-one while attending Michigan State University.” Janet said.

In conclusion, today we learned that you are not supposed to spell out dates or serial numbers unless it’s in dialogue. I gave you a few examples to use as examples to help you better understand. Remember, when you write things should be consistent. Meaning, now that you know not to spell out dates make sure you do that throughout your letter, business proposal, or whatever you are writing.
