Is it unique? Is it really?
When was the last time you used the word ‘unique’ to describe someone or something? Now, what you were describing…was it really unique; meaning was it one of a kind, or without an equal? If not, then what you described is not ‘unique’. We, myself included, use the word ‘unique’ too loosely. When we’re describing a TV show or relationship to a friend it wouldn’t be surprising for us to use the word ‘unique’ because we think it is, but is it really? Is it really without an equal? When I write freelance stories for the Oakland Press newspaper, my editor Nicole always pushes me to really think about the words I use. It was Nicole that brought the word ‘unique’ to my attention and warned me about using it so loosely.
So as you continue to add these writing tips to your everyday routine be conscience about the words you use and make sure it truly describes and expresses what you’re trying to say. Oh, and if you’re feeling overwhelmed about trying to use all these tips remember this: you only get better at writing by writing. So don’t get discouraged. Your brain muscles just have to keep working until it becomes second nature.
