Write It Right Wednesdays
Learning to write in your natural style
June 17, 2020
Believe it or not, you have a unique writing style. No one writes the same way, which is why it’s important to learn your writing style so that you can steadily improve it.
Your writing style is basically how you put words together. For example, I write how I talk. I learned this early, thankfully, from my 8th grade teacher Mrs. Bertram. I loved writing even back then so any assignments or tests with an essay question got my full attention. Once she told me that I started paying attention to see if what she said was true and it was. It was like a light went off. I understood my writing style and since I now had a baseline to work with I could start perfecting my writing. To discover your writing style write in a way that feels most natural using familiar words and phrases. Another type of writer is a descriptive writer. Someone who writes a lot of details and explains things thoroughly.
Language heavily influences our writing because language is learned from modeled behavior. Therefore your language is the reflection of what you’ve heard from birth to now. Your family, friends, workplace, and etc have all influenced the words you use and how you put them together. Start emulating their language you want to use in your own vocabulary and it will transfer to your writing as well. That’s why it’s important to never stop improving your writing because you’re always adding to it.
In conclusion, learning your writing style can give you an advantage because you can perfect it and write at a higher level. To learn your writing style pay attention to how you write things and lightweight compare it to how others write. Think about why you write it like that and how the other writer would’ve written it. Finally, when writing, really think about what you’re trying to say, what you’re actually saying and if you could say it better.
