Using commas in a series of 3 or more

June 3, 2020

Commas can be tricky, especially when you’re listing things. When using a comma for listing of things or people of 3 or more do not put a comma behind the last one. For example, my favorite colors for the birthday party are purple, green, and black because those are my backyard colors. Notice the series of three – purple, green and black – there is no comma after black (the last word in the series).

This is good information to know because sometimes when writing we comma a sentence to death. I’ve known people to add a comma to a sentence because they said it looked good. Looks are a small part of writing (it’s kind of like the bun). The content is the meat and if the meat isn’t good it won’t matter how the bun tastes.

In short, don’t overuse commas. When listing a series of three, don’t put a comma behind the last one. Also, don’t overuse commas in a sentence. It stops the reading from finding a flow for your writing style.
